What Is Stick Drift? Causes, Test, and Fixes
Stick drift is when a controller registers movement while the stick is centered. Learn what causes it, how to test for it in seconds, and how to fix it.

Stick drift is when a controller reports analog stick movement while you are not touching the stick. In a game it shows up as a character that keeps walking, a camera that slowly pans, or a menu cursor that creeps in one direction. It happens on every brand, from the PS5 DualSense to Xbox controllers to the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, because they all use the same basic kind of analog sensor that wears over time. The good news: you can confirm drift in a few seconds, and you can often measure exactly how bad it is before deciding whether to repair or replace the controller.
What causes stick drift?
Most analog sticks use a pair of potentiometers, one for each axis. As you move the stick, a wiper slides across a resistive track and the controller reads the changing voltage as a position. Two things go wrong with age:
- Wear on the resistive track. The wiper slowly scratches the material it rides on. Once the surface is uneven, the "centered" reading is no longer a clean zero.
- Contamination. Dust and skin oil work into the housing and change the readings, which is why a drift can sometimes be improved by cleaning.
The result is a resting value that sits a little off center instead of at exactly zero. The controller cannot tell the difference between that stray value and a real, gentle push of the stick, so it acts on it.
How to test for stick drift
You do not need to install anything. Any modern browser can read your controller through the Gamepad API, which is exactly how the controller tester on this site works. The test takes about five seconds:
- Connect your controller by cable or Bluetooth and press any button so the browser detects it.
- Let go of both sticks completely. Rest your hands away from the controller.
- Start the drift test and hold still while it samples the resting position.
- Read the result. A healthy stick reports a resting offset near zero. Drift shows up as a steady offset that points in one consistent direction.
The number matters more than the feeling. A resting offset of a few percent that always points the same way is drift. Random jitter that bounces around dead center is normal sensor noise, not a fault.
How to fix stick drift
Fixes range from free to a full module swap:
- Clean it first. With the controller off, work a little isopropyl alcohol into the base of the stick and rotate the stick through its full range a few times. This clears contamination and resolves a surprising share of mild cases.
- Adjust the deadzone. Many games and the tester let you widen the deadzone, the zone around center that is ignored. A larger deadzone masks a small offset, though it also makes the stick slightly less precise.
- Recalibrate. Some platforms offer a calibration routine that re-teaches the controller where center is.
- Replace the module. If cleaning and deadzone changes do not help, the potentiometer module itself is worn. Replacement modules are inexpensive, and many controllers are designed to be opened, though it takes some soldering.
When is drift bad enough to act on?
If the measured offset is large enough to move your character or camera on its own, it will affect play and it will only get worse. Test each stick, note the offset percentage, and keep a record. If you are inside a return or warranty window, a measured reading is useful evidence. For the Nintendo Switch in particular, Joy-Con drift has been common enough that Nintendo has offered repairs in several regions.
Drift is a mechanical wear problem, not a mistake you made. Testing early means you catch it while your options are still open.
