Test for stick drift. Let go of both sticks and watch the resting position. Good result: each stick sits at dead center and stays there. Test rumble on both motors. Most controllers have two vibration motors, a heavy one and a light one. Trigger the rumble test. Good result: you feel both motors, and each produces a clearly different strength of vibration. Bad result: no vibration at all, or only one side buzzing, which means a dead motor.

Check the polling rate. Polling rate is how often the controller reports its state to your device, measured in hertz. Watch the reported value while you move a stick. Good result: a steady number in the expected range for your controller, with no large drops. Bad result: a rate that swings wildly or collapses, which can signal a cable, wireless, or hardware problem. Treat this as a sanity check rather than a strict pass or fail grade, since exact numbers vary by device.

Confirm connection stability. Use the controller for a minute or two, on both wired and wireless if it supports both. Good result: input stays constant with no dropouts. Bad result: buttons or sticks that cut out, lag, or disconnect. If wireless drops but wired is solid, suspect the battery, the radio, or a receiver problem.
Do the whole loop twice
Run the full checklist once cold, then again after ten or fifteen minutes of normal use. Some faults, especially drift and trigger stick, only appear once the hardware warms up. A second pass catches problems that a quick first look can miss.
Documenting the problem for a refund or warranty claim
If the controller fails any step, capture evidence before you contact anyone. Clear proof turns a slow back and forth into a quick approval.
